In most cases, hearing loss is a gradual decline over a number of years. It is less common to lose a large portion of your hearing instantly. For this reason, it is often difficult to tell if your hearing is deteriorating. You simply do not know what you are missing when you don’t hear it. Family and friends are often the first to notice that you may be having trouble hearing and suggest that you have it checked. Some symptoms are:
• Needing increased television and radio volume
• Finding it hard to understand speech, especially in noisy environments
• People sound like they are mumbling to you and not speaking clearly
• Finding telephone conversations difficult
• Asking people to repeat themselves frequently
• Avoiding social activities because you can’t understand people
